It's official! Our unique horseradish infused vodka - newly named and bottled as Renegade - is now available for your enjoyment and purchase from our Roots and Wings Distillery store (online and onsite at our Langley distillery tasting room) and select liquor stores throughout British Columbia.
Savoury cocktails have long been popular in Canada, especially as the ubiquitous Caesar was invented 50 years ago in our country. But whether it's the Caesar or Bloody Mary, it's the requisites of vodka and the comfort of spice and heat that draw salty cocktail enthusiast to these drinks, not to mention all the fun add-on garnishes from maple bacon or smoked oysters to a plethora of pickled veggies! Inspired by a client's request and the opportunity to one-up the zesty cocktail game, we are pleased to create a unique horseradish-style vodka for all the folks that want a bit more zip in their sip!
Renegade (375 ml bottles) is now part of our family of spirits and is crafted in small batches with horseradish (sourced from a Fraser Valley farm) steeped in our Vital Vodka, made from our homegrown potatoes and corn. The name – Renegade - reflects its untamed nature, breaking away from the traditional sweet finish of vodka to deliver a layered profile of distinct earthy tones, a spike of heat and an aroma of fresh radish!
While this bold horseradish vodka is ideal for kicking up a spicy Caesar, Bloody Mary or Horseradish Sour, it's also great as a base for a Dirty Martini topped with smoked olives! If you’re adventurous - and we know you are - then try it out in your cooking, like a vodka cured salmon dish. Be a Renegade, break free from the norm!
For the home mixologists or anyone that enjoys flavourful cocktails, gift them the joy of local artisan spirits - vodka, gin and whiskey - that we craft at our farm-distillery. We also have a large selection of gift-worthy bar accessories at our tasting room shop. And, to make giving easier for you this holiday season we are offering 4 beautifully presented, cocktail themed gift boxes. Choose from the Caesar Cocktail Gift Box, Old Fashioned Cocktail Gift Box, Cara Cara Crantini Cocktail Gift Box, and Coffee Nog Cocktail Gift Box - ranging from $75 to $128 which include bottles of spirits and mixing ingredients.

It is the season to be crafty; as in crafting various cocktails! From corporate Christmas parties where you are told to be careful and not tell your micromanaging boss how you feel about them, and to the dysfunctional family get-together where sipping a cocktail or beverage of choice is the only thing keeping you from getting into a political disagreement with uncle Larry.
It’s always good to know how to mix up a crafty cocktail or two to impress that boss of yours or keep uncle Larry quiet for a minute or two.
Then of course there are those cocktail parties you want to go to … the ones with your Imbibe Tribe; the family made of friends that always make you laugh, are there for you no matter what and can bring out the best in the holiday season.
For these fine folks, you should want to show off your cocktail making skills. So, if you haven’t already visited our website we now have a cocktails page. There are lots of different ideas that won’t cost a fortune and can probably be made with ingredients that you already have at home.
For you beer fans, may I suggest the Midnight Mocha made with a nice dark chocolate porter, some Double Vice Coffee Infused Vodka and Chocolate bitters. Delicious and warming while you cozy up to the fireplace.
Happy cocktailing from My imbibe Tribe to yours!

Facebook is now reminding me to remember with those reminders of where we were and what we were doing a year ago this time… it tends to put things in perspective on how far we have come in the last year with our little distillery.
Sometimes I’m so caught up in the day to day distilling, reporting, bottling, and occasionally breathing I forget to remember how much we have accomplished in the last year.
Just a few minor wins add up to where we are today; we planted and harvest a very successful crop of potatoes and corn, we were approved for our manufacturer license, business license, and liquor license. We completed the tasting room a few months behind schedule but completed none the less, during the snowiest winter we’ve seen in years! Purchased and installed the distilling equipment; and now we are on our 4th batch of Vodka, first batch of infused Vodkas, and have the whisky-ish spirit ready for bottling we just need the label to go along with it.
The dreams of Gin are just starting to take hold; I keep stumbling across inspirations to create a profile that will convert the even the anti-gin drinkers to keep a bottle Jackknife Gin handy for any occasion.
Along with all that I finally am saying good bye to my corporate job that I have had for the past 8 years and even though it is exciting to be branching out on my own I will be sad to say good bye. However now that I have my mornings free to enjoy a leisurely coffee before I fire up the still I’m sure I won’t be sad for long.
Right now, we are looking forward to being part of the Fraser Valley Indie Festivals this summer with Loving Local; as well as Hopscotch in Vancouver in the fall and The Meat and Cheese Festival in Yaletown in September. Keep an eye out on our events page to know where we will pop up next.
Thank goodness we have the fantastic support and marketing expertise of Crush Marketing for our craft distillery’s online marketing presence - from social media setup, content development and web design/implementation to POS/ecommerce setup. This website, with all its bells and whistles, wouldn’t be what it is today without their help. They have guided us through a range of online and offline options, and helped us to make the best decisions along the way for our brand and our new business.
As a distillery, I think we’ve made an excellent choice with Vin65 as our web platform and their online functionality for the wine-beer-liquor industry seems to be the best fit for us. Thus far, we’ve had great service and support.
So, if you are ever struggling with details for your online marketing, then just remember you’re not alone in sorting out the minutia; give Frank and Kathy a call at Crush Marketing as they are excellent at focusing on the details that matter.
Opening weekend of the tasting room
After much anticipation, We have opened the Roots and Wings Tasting Room in Langley beside our Distillery. For those of you that joined us on opening weekend Thank you; although it was not the grand opening it was nice to see all the familiar faces and several new ones.
If you were there you know that we were facing some technical difficulties with our debit and credit machines; it was a cash only kind of day, which turned out to be just fine with most of you. I very much appreciate the flexibility. I know now why they say to have a soft opening with friends and family only, so when these things happen you don’t have to feel overly stressed.
We somewhat had a soft opening … the friends and family came … and we put it on social media that it was a soft opening but sure enough the very first customers had to be total strangers; but they took it in stride (a lot better than I did).
You would think I would understand technology and the need to unplug and reboot since that is the type of work I do in my other job, but no that is not what happened. My mind went blank, I misplaced my phone to call the help line, I couldn’t find an account number to save my life, and more customers kept coming in…. right about that moment I wanted to unplug myself and reboot.
If it were only that easy … instead I just had to say with the sincerest apologies that we couldn’t take plastic but we would happily serve you Vodka regardless.
Moral of this blog … Cash is King… technology fails… soft openings are recommended… Vital Vodka is worth the wait…
Tasting Room is now open Saturday and Sunday 11am to 5pm… see you soon.
Roadblocks, setbacks, callback’s, and other hurdles are there to educate you or to make you crazy. Most of the above mentioned are inflicted from those of us that do not dream big enough to change their miserable circumstances so they need to share their wealth of wrath on anyone they can.
The joys of thinking outside the box; just because it hasn’t been done before does not me that it cannot be done. These are words I live by and thus I don’t take no for an answer very easily. Stubbornness some may call it; I prefer determination. My determination is only outdone by my partner Rob who is a combo of determination and motivation on steroids. I think secretly he thrives on Roadblocks, setbacks, callback’s, and other hurdles; so when he overcomes them he can bask in the glory of the win.
So, next time you come across these inflectors of wrath take a queue Rob and go for the win, find your way around the NO and make your big beautiful dreams a reality. Trust me the moment of glory is well worth it.
While you’re plotting your way to Yes; Vital Vodka is always a good choice to liberate the brain muscles and clear out the plaque.
This is a virtue I was not blessed with … wit occasionally ... sarcasm usually but not the ever-desired patience. Years ago, I thought it was the MC1R gene that also gives me the red hair, pushed out the other gene needed for patience but I have since been ‘google-educated’ that patience is in fact not a gene but a learned behavior. So, I am happy to report for all of you other patience challenged out there, that there is hope for us after all.
I’ve always been aware of this shortcoming but have managed to make do without offending too many people along the way … however it has become painfully noticeable on the day long distilling days that average 14 to 16 hours. Luckily the excitement of seeing the pristine crystal clear spirits pour out of the parrot provides me with enough endorphins to outweigh the frustrating part of waiting to make the right cuts, to monitor the temperature correctly, to ferment fully, and to get the most out of a low and slow distillation.
Since Roots and Wings Distillery is a small batch distillery (at the moment), I know that it is just a matter of time before we move into a rhythm that doesn’t require me to constantly monitor every second like a hawk waiting at a mouse hole; but in the meantime, this hawk hoping this is just the ticket to a learned behavior called patience.
